Toronto Disability Pride March and Celebration of Life for Kevin Jackson

The Accessibility Committee has endorsed this year’s Toronto Disability Pride March on September 21st (1 pm – 5 pm) which also includes a Celebration of Life for Kevin Jackson. Kevin Jackson was an activist, scholar, and friend to many. He was also a PhD student in Critical Disabilities Studies at York University and a member of CUPE 3903. Kevin passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in early July, leaving behind his fiancee and only family, Melissa Graham.

Members are encouraged to attend the march to raise awareness of the issues facing people with disabilities in our community and to celebrate the life of Kevin Jackson. The march starts at Queen’s Park and goes to 99 Gerrard Street East where the celebration of life will occur.

York Unilaterally Changes Unit 1 and 3 Funding Payments!

Members of Units 1 and 3 may have received a message from York today about changes to the way Grant-in-Aid (GIA) is paid out. York has unilaterally made these changes without consulting the Local. Worse yet, York attempted to make these changes by inserting language into our collective agreements that was neither agreed to in bargaining nor part of the Arbitrated settlement. York has essentially violated the very principal of Collective Bargaining!

Check out our page on “What you REALLY need to know about Grant-in-Aid” for further information on what this means to you, what we are doing about it, and how to report issues.

Several Committee Positions up for Election at September GMM.

Several committee elections will occur at the September GMM (Sept. 19th): Childcare Committee, Professional Development Fund Committee, Research Grants Fund and Travel Costs Fund Committee (Unit 2 only), and the Ways and Means Committee. We will also be electing a Unit 3 LMC Representative and there will be a by-election for one Joint Health and Safety Committee position.

To put your name forward for a position please email Stacey Berquist, Vice President Unit 1 (cupe3903vpu1@gmail.com) by 5pm on Tuesday, September 17th. More details about the committees can be found on the committee page. Brief details are below.
