Report Back – Mediated Bargaining with Chris Albertyn, May 29th–30th

Employer Refuses to Engage in Meaningful Discussion of Job Security in Seventh Weekend of Mediated Bargaining with Chris Albertyn

On May 29th and 30th, the Bargaining Team met with mediator Chris Albertyn. We are disappointed to see that more than two months into this process, the Employer still refuses to commit to meaningful improvement of job security for our members. The Employer’s lack of response on equity runs counter to the priorities identified by the membership and York’s own stated commitments. Click here to see the Union’s latest proposal package.

1) Job Security

a) Transitional Continuing Appointments (TCA)
In our latest pass, the Union made significant movement:

  • Appointments of 1, 2, and 3 years would be granted except in exceptional circumstances, while appointments of 4 and 5 years would not be unreasonably denied. The Employer would have to provide a written rationale for the rejection of 4- and 5- year appointments within 30 days.
  • The minimum threshold for eligibility would be 2.0 average course load for the last X years.

CUPE 3903 Stands in Solidarity with the Palestinian People!

The following statement was endorsed by the CUPE 3903 membership at the GMM on May 31, 2021.

The members of CUPE 3903 stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people in their liberation struggle against settler colonialism, apartheid rule, and the ongoing expulsion and ethnic cleansing across the country, including in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the West Bank and besieged Gaza.

We condemn the York University President’s recent portrayal of these recent atrocities as a two-sided ‘conflict’ – the very same President who allowed and defended an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) recruitment event to take place on campus in 2019. Time and again, reports from various international human rights organizations, including the United Nations (UN), have concluded that Israel is an apartheid regime. In January 2021, B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, released a report that illustrates the various ways in which the State of Israel’s racist practices against Palestinians constitute apartheid. This analysis was further corroborated by Human Rights Watch.

CUPE 3903 Endorses Motion on YU Weapons Divestment Campaign

The following motion was passed at the CUPE 3903 GMM on May 31, 2021:

Whereas, there is an ongoing ethnic cleansing against Indigenous Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah, Silwan, and other neighborhoods across occupied Palestine.

Whereas, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) recently released a report concluding that Israel is an apartheid state and is guilty of crimes against humanity.

And, whereas, York University invests in arms manufacturers, namely: Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Amphenol, and Textron Inc.

Whereas, Amphenol is the main supplier of military and aerospace products to the Israeli army.

Petition – Support CUPE 3903 Clinical Course Directors who serve on the front lines of the pandemic

A visibly tired nurse is reading on her computer.

York University is mistreating nurses during a global pandemic! Tell York to address the problems in the School of Nursing by bargaining effective solutions.

The School of Nursing at York University relies heavily on the work of precariously-employed Clinical Course Directors (CCDs) to train the next generation of nurses. As workers in the School of Nursing at York, CCDs are facing a number of long-standing labour issues: they have to repeatedly meet arbitrary demands to prove qualifications despite a rigorous system of checks already in place by their College; they are expected to be available 12 hours a day, 7 days a week; and they are facing increasing class sizes.
