December 20 Bargaining Report

On Wednesday, December 20, the bargaining team for CUPE 3903 Units 1, 2, and 3 met with the employer for the last bargaining meeting of 2017. It was a brief meeting, but the union has now presented its full proposal package.

A comparative table of proposals and responses has been prepared by the bargaining team: Bargaining Proposals and Responses up to December 20. All of the proposal documents which have been tabled so far are available on the Reports page

CUPE 3903 Calls for Strike Mandate Vote

The CUPE 3903 Executive Committee and Bargaining Team are calling for a strong strike mandate vote. A ‘YES’ vote empowers the bargaining team to negotiate a good deal for all three units. A strong strike mandate puts pressure on the employer to negotiate a fair deal.

There will be two Special General Membership Meetings to discuss the strike mandate vote:

Voting will open at the January 19 SGMM, and continue from Monday January 22, to Friday January 26.

Nominate Yourself to Attend the Labour Notes Conference

At the November General Membership Meeting, a decision was made to send six CUPE 3903 members to the Labour Notes Conference in Chicago, April 6-8 2018. The local will pay for registration, travel, accommodation, and a per diem for food and other expenses.

The Labour Notes Conference is a gathering of grassroots union activists, featuring workshops and meetings about concrete labour issues, such as how to organize, strike, and bargain. Find out more here.

To nominate yourself to attend, email Hossein at cupe3903vpu1@gmail.com by 5 pm on January 9. If more than six members volunteer, there will be a vote at the January 10 GMM.

December 4 Bargaining Report: Wages and Benefits, and Stall Tactics

On Monday, December 4, the bargaining team for CUPE 3903 Units 1, 2, and 3 met with the employer to continue negotiating new collective agreements. Very little bargaining occurred, as the employer deployed shameful stalling tactics. At the end of the day, CUPE 3903 filed for conciliation.

A comparative table of proposals and responses has been prepared by the bargaining team: Bargaining Proposals and Responses up to December 4. All of the proposal documents which have been tabled so far are available on the Reports page, with the exception of employer counters from the last meeting, which will be added as soon as we receive digital copies.

CUPE 3903 Files for Conciliation

In order to move the process of bargaining forward, and work toward securing renewed collective agreements for our members, CUPE 3903 has filed for conciliation with the Ministry of Labour. At this point in negotiations, following nine meetings with the York University administration, we are far apart on all major issues, including Unit 2 job security, Unit 3 jobs, Unit 1 and 3 funding, class size, wages, benefits, childcare funding, support for survivors of sexual violence and equity proposals.

Conciliation is a service offered by the Ministry of Labour to help the two sides reach an agreement. We are hopeful that the conciliation process will bring the two sides closer. CUPE 3903 is committed to working toward a fair collective agreement for Unit 1, 2 and 3 members. The CUPE 3903 Bargaining Team has set aside dates to continue bargaining twice a week in January.

Our teaching conditions are students’ learning conditions.
