Space is limited!

If you are a CUPE 3903 member, join us for a FREE taiko workshop!  We’ll do some gentle body movement; go over the basics of stance, grip and hit; learn some taiko rhythms; and  release rage and find joy in playing together! All levels are welcome. Bachi (taiko drumsticks) will be provided.

RAW Taiko, founded in 1998 as Raging Asian Women Taiko Drummers, is an artist-run Toronto-based performing arts organisation made up of East and Southeast Asian women and gender non-conforming drummers. They carry on the diasporic taiko tradition that grew out of Asian American and Asian Canadian participation in racial and gender justice movements of the 60s and 70s. One of the few taiko drumming groups of its kind in the world, RAW Taiko exists as a critical response and challenge to both systemic and internalized oppressions. RAW Taiko plays large drums as creative resistance for social change, carving space for self-expression, education and community building.

How to prepare: Wear comfortable clothes (we recommend dressing in layers) and bring a water bottle! Note, no outdoor shoes are permitted on the vinyl rehearsal floor – only barefoot, socks, or indoor shoes are permitted.

Access:

-Studio RAW is a masked space. We will provide a mask if you don’t have your own.
-Studio RAW is located on the top/second floor of a low-rise building, and unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible. To access the studio, visitors must walk up one flight of stairs (20 steps) with railing. The stairwell is 45” wide.
-Studio RAW is a low-scent space and RAW regularly uses unscented cleaning products.
-There is one single-stall bathroom on site.
-Street parking is available for free on the North and South sides of Dupont St (except for 7am-9am & 4pm-6pm, Mon-Fri). The Galleria Mall Parking lot offers free parking (anytime).

This program is offered by RAW Taiko in solidarity with CUPE 3903.
