It was standing room only at the Special General Membership Meeting on December 4, as almost 150 members of CUPE 3903 met to discuss setting dates for a strike mandate vote and developing the Union’s mobilization strategy. At the beginning of the meeting, members of the Executive Committee and the Bargaining Mobilization Committee made three short presentations on possible timelines. There was near unanimous agreement that a strike vote is urgently needed, given the Employer’s disappointing responses to the Union’s bargaining proposals. The main debate was over what kind of mobilization we need, and what kind of timeline we need to get it.

After an extensive and productive discussion, the meeting voted by a large margin to set voting dates for a strike mandate for January 26 to 30, 2015.

Members also began discussion about the Union’s mobilization strategy, which will include a series of campus-wide events in the first three weeks of January, along with another round of local departmental meetings. There have already been 17 departmental luncheons this semester, all of them including detailed discussion of the Union’s bargaining proposals and the Bargaining Team’s experience at the bargaining table. More will take place at the start of the next semester.

Now that dates have been set for a strike mandate vote, all members are encouraged to join the mobilization. The next meeting of the Bargaining Mobilization Committee will take place on Thursday, December 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in downtown Toronto (location TBA).

This meeting will focus on all the tasks related to the mobilization for a strike mandate vote in January 2015. All members of CUPE 3903 are welcome to participate.
