(1) Will There Be Back-to-Work Legislation?

It is possible that the Liberal government will introduce back-to-work legislation. However, the timeline before the election is such that they would require unanimous consent. The NDP have indicated that they will not provide it. This means that we do not yet have a clear answer regarding what is coming next. Stay tuned over the next few days as the situation develops.

(2) Kaplan’s Report Fails to Address Employer’s Refusal to Bargain

On Friday, May 4, Mr. William Kaplan released his report resulting from the Industrial Inquiry Commission, which was called by the Ministry of Labour on April 13.

CUPE 3903 is dismayed with the partiality of the report and the failure of the Commissioner to engage in a critical analysis of the facts as they were presented to him. The Commissioner’s failure to adequately understand the situation is troubling because it sets a dangerous precedent for employers to abdicate their responsibility to bargain without consequences.

This rank and file organized townhall for Unit 1 and 3 is meant to create a space where questions and concerns around what a ‘final offer settlement’ should look like can be heard and discussed. The BT will be asked to present their proposal as discussed at the May 3 GMM.

Each unit will have a chance to caucus and discuss their unit-specific issues separately if they wish.

This Unit 2 Townhall is a venue to discuss the proposal by the bargaining team presented at the May 3 GMM. Participants can discuss and debate the contents of the proposal and return with recommendations, if appropriate, for the May 9 GMM.

Following the strike policy, Strike SGMMs are held weekly for the duration of the strike. The agenda will include reports from the Executive Committee, Treasurer, Bargaining Team, and Strike Committee, as well as time for motions from the floor and discussion of the direction of the strike.

The motions that were tabled at the last meeting will be revisited.

Doors open at 4:30 pm. Come early to get first dibs on the food!
