February GMM – Bylaw and Donation Request

In advance of the February GMM, please find below language for the donation request(s) and bylaw amendment(s) which we will be voting on.

Donation request: Upping the Anti – A journal of theory and action ($2000)

Upping the Anti is a Toronto-based grassroots print and online journal that publishes about social movements, collective struggle and international solidarity. The writers and editors are mostly based in Toronto and in Canada, but we publish material with a national and international perspective. In the past we have published articles about CUPE and other labor Unions’ organizing efforts. Our Journal is important in archiving movements’ histories, also to learn lessons from past organizings with the hope that the new generations of activists can have a critical and educational lens of the past movements.

We are close to publishing our 22nd issue. Because of the ongoing pandemic, we have lost our ability to do tabling or host public events that in previous times have generated most of the funds for the cost of printing our issues.  Printing each issue costs more than $4600 plus $3000 shipping costs. With our online store we have secured roughly half of the required funds, on top of our other costs, and the requested donation will help us to continue this Journal that has been going strong for more than 15 years.

Bylaw Amendment: Article 8b (Executive Commitee)

The monthly amount of the Executive honoraria is the value of 8 10 Course Directorships divided by 14, divided equally among Executive Committee positions minus the employer contributions to CPP and EI. Should the amount provided by the Employer be insufficient to cover the full honoraria, the difference will be transferred from the Main Operating account to the Executive Service account.
