Updates from the January GMM

At the GMM on January 9th several important discussions were had and motions passed. Please continue reading for highlights of the meeting. Thank you to everyone who came out.

The hiring protocol for a staff member to replace our retiring Equity Officer was passed, with amendments. General members were also elected to serve on the hiring committee. The hiring committee members are: Fardosa Warsame and Kate Kaul, with Firoza Elavia and Emilie Hurst serving as alternates.

The membership also approved the hiring of an Assistant Staff Representative. The Assistant SR would be a new permanent, part-time staff position. The hiring committee for the Assistant SR position is scheduled to be elected at the AGM.

The membership agreed to join CUPE 3902 (University of Toronto) in licensing a sectoral database to track grievances and other information (Unionware). Notice-to-Reader (compilation) financial statements for 2017, 2018, and 2019 rather than audited financial statements were also approved.The audited financial statements will occur again for 2020

All bylaw amendments passed. These were an amendment to Article 15.b – Membership Meetings and the addition of a new Appendix; Appendix I – Confidentiality Rules.

The membership expressed solidarity with student protests in India and  Wet’suwet’en land defenders, and endorsed Students Against Israeli Apartheid at UofT Israeli Apartheid Week.
